All The Way To Stop Windows 10 From Sucking Your Data


Microsoft's Windows OS isn't any one thing. It arises from a patchwork of finely tuned features. Each individual feature is, in turn, the result of a team of dedicated engineers who create the best (often personalizable) experience possible. So, with such a complex, nuanced, and vast piece of software, it makes sense that there is change that will suck much data especially Windows 10 which is needs data. Though, getting cheapest mobile data easy today in Nigeria but Windows 10 seems not to be okay with it.

Windows 10 is designed to be an always-connected, always-up-to-date operating system. It’s the most data-hungry version of Windows yet, but you can restrain it from going all-out on your home network with a few tricks.

A lot of us don’t have unlimited internet these days, or, unlimited data plans and Windows 10 stealing all your precious megabytes and resulting in a massive bill or completely cut off from the internet itself because Windows absolutely needed to updates, even if you have it that doesn’t meant it won’t exhausted.

Disable Windows Updates

At first when it comes this almost everyone attention is on Windows Updates, of course yes, Windows 10 normally downloads and installs updates automatically without your input. Automatic Store App Updates

Windows 10 app store automatically updates the apps you downloaded from the store which is another nightmare when you are not on Wi-Fi connection, within a minutes your bandwidth will be exhausted, so disabling it is a good idea.

To prevent Windows 10 from updating Windows Store apps on its own, open the Store app. Click or tap your profile picture near the search box and select “Settings.” Disable the “Update Apps Automatically” checkbox. You can still update your Store apps manually from the Windows Store app, but Windows won’t automatically download app updates on its own.
This is useful even if you haven’t installed any apps from the Store. Many of Windows 10’s included apps are updated through the Store.

Disabling Live Tile

Those live tiles on your Start menu use a bit of data, too–although not much. You won’t save much data by disabling live tiles, but you can do it if you want to save every little bit. To prevent a tile from automatically downloading and displaying new data, right-click or long-press it in the Start menu, point to “More,” and select “Turn Live Tile Off.”

There’s a good chance that a lot of your data usage comes from your web browser–you can see just how much by looking at the Data Usage screen.

To save data on this web browsing, use a web browser that includes a built-in compressing proxy feature. The web browser will route the data through other servers where it’s compressed before being sent to you. This is normally a feature common on smartphones, not desktop PCs, but if you really need to save data–maybe you have a satellite Internet connection with a very low data cap, for example–you may want to do this.

Google offers an official DataSaver extension for Google Chrome, and it functions the same as the Data Saver feature built into the Chrome browser on Android and iPhone. Install that into Google, and you’re good to go. The Opera browser also has a “Turbo mode“, which works similarly, if you’re more of an Opera fan.

Switch Off Background Apps

Windows 10 allows some of the background apps to function by default which in turn consumes a lot of data. The notable culprit here is the “Mail” application that depletes the majority of data. In such cases, it is rather safe to switch off of these offenders or apps in order to save yourself some data.


Go to “Settings”, click on “Privacy” and now locate “Background apps”. Switch off the “Background apps” options and then scroll through and switch off any other apps that you think you do not require and are finishing your data.


Disable PC Syncing

It may sound odd to disable such a hallmark feature in Windows 10. I love PC syncing, but I honestly don’t need to have it running around the clock. You can turn it off, and when you do need to keep things synced, you can easily turn it on.

Go to Settings > Accounts > Sync your settings and turn Sync settings off.


If you think it’s a bit too much, you can pick and choose some settings to sync, for example, Web Browser should not be as bandwidth intensive as Other Windows Settings and Language Preferences.

Disabling HTML 5 Videos

Disabling automatic playback just pauses the video; it doesn’t prevent it from loading. Depending on how the video is set to load on the page, your browser may automatically download the entire video or just begin buffering part of it, even if you haven’t loaded it yet. This won’t prevent media from downloading entirely, as click-to-play did for Flash content.
Chrome doesn’t have this feature built-in. It’s possible to prevent many HTML5 videos on the web from automatically playing by installing the Stop YouTube HTML5 AutoPlay browser extension from the Chrome Web Store.

Set “One Drive” Off

One Drive is one of the other background apps in the Windows 10 that depletes your data in no time. It is indeed one of the most crucial apps in the Windows 10 OS disabling which can be a radical step, however, not many of us need it running in the background at all times. Yes, the One Drive does help you sync your files which makes life simpler, but that can be even done in the next cyber café. This may take a while for you; however, it will save you some substantial data over the period.


In order to deactivate the One Drive, right clicking on the “Task Bar” will open up a list. Select “Task Manager” from the list and click on it or alternatively use your keyboard shortcuts, such as, CTRL + SHIFT + ESC all at once. Under this you will see a series of tabs and the one that you need to click on is the “Startup” tab. This will further open up a list and here you need to scroll down and select “Microsoft OneDrive”. Now deactivate this option to stop “One Drive” from automatically syncing the files in the background. You can also disable other drives, like the Google Drive or the Dropbox in order to save data.

Living in a rural area comes with limits for bandwidth, and for me, that means I only have access to 3G networks. If you are like me, you might be coming to the realization that Windows 10 loves data…a lot. I don’t have any choice since I like to keep up with the latest and greatest in software. I noticed after upgrading to Windows 10 in 2016, my data plans were quickly eaten up in minutes. I started wondering what could be causing this? I had already done the standard task like setting my connection as Metered (which I will show you how). The data just kept disappearing. Eventually, I discovered the culprits.
